BATON ROUGE — LSU short sprint star Muna Lee was named one of four finalists for the 2002-03 track and field Honda Sports Award, it was announced today by the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards.
Lee, a Kansas City, Mo., native has had one of the finest seasons on record in her third year with the Lady Tigers. She capped off a phenomenal indoor campaign by becoming just the fourth women in NCAA history, and the first in nine years, to sweep the short sprint events at the NCAA Championships, winning gold in both the 60 and 200-meter dash events. En route to claiming both titles Lee shattered the 21-year old collegiate record in the 200 meters (22.49), while also breaking her own school record in the 60-meter dash (7.15).
Lee’s success has continued this outdoor season, as she most recently became just the second woman in SEC history to win three straight conference titles in her signature event, the 100-meter dash. The Central High School product also anchored the Lady Tigers’ 4×100-meter relay team, a group that currently owns the world-leading time in the event this season, to its second consecutive SEC title in the event.
Lee will enter next week’s NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships with the nation’s top time in the 100-meter dash (11.04, 10.97w) and the collegiate-best mark in the 200-meters (22.74).
The Honda Sports Award is given annually to the top collegiate athlete in 12 different sports. After nationwide balloting, the winner of each individual sport award automatically becomes a nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the nation’s outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year. In addition to the nomination, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will donate $1,000 to the women’s athletic fund of each finalist’s university.
The institution of the Honda-Broderick Cup winner will receive an additional $5,000 donation.
