Humphries Named LSWA Golfer of the Year

LAKE CHARLES, La. — LSU senior John Humphries and Tulane junior Carolin Landmann were named the Louisiana collegiate golfers of the year on the 2003 LSWA Team, selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

McNeese State’s Don Meadows was named Coach of the Year on the men’s team and Tulane’s Sue Bower was named women’s Coach of the Year. Southeastern Louisiana’s Brett Bergeron was named Freshman of the Year on the men’s team and Tulane’s Lillian Alvarez received the honor on the women’s side. McNeese State’s Beau Dark was named men’s Newcomer of the Year. Tulane swept the top three individual awards on the women’s team.

Humphries was named the state’s Player of the Year for the first time in his career and made the team for the third-straight season. Humphries was a member of the second team in 2002, and first team in 2001. He made the first team for the second time in his career. Humphries enjoyed on of the best seasons in LSU history in 2002-03, playing in all 12 of the Tigers’ tournaments, with 21 rounds of par or better, nine top-20 finishes, six top-10 finishes, and his first-career victory. He led the team with a 72.3 stroke average.

He fired a 5-under par 211 to win the LSU Spring Invitational individual title on March 2 in Baton Rouge. He finished in at least the top seven individually in seven of LSU’s final eight tournaments of the season. Humphries shot a 4-over par 214 to tie for fifth place at the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championship last month. He was named First Team All-SEC earlier this month for the first time in his career.

Humphries was joined on the first team by SLU’s Bergeron, Tulane’s Chris Wheeler, SLU’s Mark O’Sullivan, and Louisiana-Monroe’s Bryan Vahlberg. Wheeler made the first team for the second-straight season. LSU sophomore Heath West was named to the second team after making the first team in 2002. West, a Dothan, Ala., native, was honored as Freshman of the Year on last season’s team. West was joined on the men’s second team by Adrien Mork and David Callaway of McNeese State, SLU’s Steven Tiley, and Erik Hsu of ULM.

The women’s side featured only a first team, and Landmann highlighted the squad. She was joined by teammates Alvarez and Lindsay Hulwick, Tessie Simar of McNeese State, and LSU’s freshman Vicky Meyer, a standout from Cotia, Brazil.

Meyer saw action in five tournaments for the Lady Tigers and posted a 76.5 stroke average with one top-10 finish.

Humphries is competing at the 2003 NCAA East Regional in Auburn, Ala. this weekend and will finish up there on Sunday. This honors continues a very successful month for the Alexandria, La. native, as he also advanced from local to sectional qualifying for the 2003 U.S. Open after shooting a 4-under par 67 on Monday in Marksville, La. Sectional qualifying will take place June 2-3 at sites across the country. The U.S. Open will be held June 12-15 in Olympia Fields, Ill.
