BATON ROUGE — Junior Kristin Schmidt and sophomore Leigh Ann Danos were named to the Verizon Academic Al-District VI Second Team, it was announced on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The duo joined five other Southeastern Conference athletes on the District VI squad which encompasses schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
Schmidt, a Houston native, sports a 3.42 grade point average in political science. The second-team All-SEC pitcher currently leads the league in strikeouts looking and ranks second in wins, earned run average, strikeouts, innings pitched and games started. In addition, she ranks in the top three in opponent’s batting average. She is one of only two pitchers in Tiger softball history to record 30 wins in season, currently sporting a 30-11 overall mark.
A Lafayette native, Danos has a 3.79 grade point average in pre-medicine.
The catcher graduated early from James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, last December before joining the LSU program before the 2002 season.
Danos is one of only two players in school history to have recorded a perfect single-season fielding percentage and has the best career fielding percentage in LSU history.
Schmidt and Danos are LSU’s second and third academic all-district selections. Tara Asbill was a two-time all-district selection in 1999 and 2000 and earned academic All-America honors in 2000.
