BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team garnered the CHAMPS Community Service Award for the 2002-03 season announced head coach George Fotopoulos on Tuesday. The prestigious honor is awarded annually to the LSU team that works the hardest towards helping the community.
“I’ve always felt that this is the greatest honor that can be obtained by a team at LSU and I am extremely proud of our girls for winning it two years in a row,” said head coach Fotopoulos. “I am very honored that our team was recognized for this award and I think that it is wonderful that our girls are dedicated to helping out the community. It is not something that they had to do, but they went out and gave 100 percent again this year.”
The LSU soccer team, which finished the 2002 season with an impressive 12-5-3 overall record, proved that it is also successful off of the field as the Tigers received the esteemed community service honor for the second-straight year. During 2001-02, the LSU soccer team earned the award for the first time in school history.
LSU’s junior soccer player, Laura Klatter, earned the individual CHAMPS Community Service Award for being the LSU athlete that dedicated the most of his or her time towards helping out the community. She became the second-straight soccer player to garner the distinction after sophomore Artie Brown earned the award a year ago.
The LSU soccer team will next be in action this fall as the Tigers kick off its 2003 schedule against Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29, at the LSU Soccer Complex.
