BATON ROUGE — LSU short sprint star Muna Lee was named the SEC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced Thursday by the conference office.
The honor marks the second one of its kind for Lee this season, and the fourth of her career, as she was also recognized by the conference during the week of Jan. 27 and in back-to-back weeks during the 2002 season.
Lee, a junior from Kansas, City, Mo., led the charge in the Lady Tigers’ outstanding effort at the prestigious Penn Relays last week. The anchor leg on both the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays teams, Lee guided both relays to meet titles with world class performances.
The 4×200-meter relay team shattered the collegiate record for the second time in less then a month, clocking an unprecedented time of 1:29.78. The Lady Tigers’ mark is the fastest in the world this season and represents a small piece of track history, as the LSU quartet became the first collegiate group to ever break the 1:30.00 barrier in the event.
Lee, a three-time NCAA national champion, also anchored the 4×100 team to a Penn Relays record in the event as the Lady Tigers crossed the finish line in just 42.73 seconds.
Individually, Lee won her third 100-meter dash title in four meets this season. The 12-time All-American topped the talented field of competitors with her time of 11.23 seconds.
Lee as well as the rest of the LSU track and field team will return to action, Saturday, when they host their final home meet of the season, the Tiger Twilight Classic, at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
