BATON ROUGE — The LSU baseball squad placed seven representatives on the 2003 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll announced this week by league commissioner Mike Slive.
The 2003 Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2001-02 academic calendar.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career; 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification; and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree.
LSU representatives on the 2003 honor roll include the late Wally Pontiff Jr., a biological sciences major. Pontiff, who died last July due to a heart abnormality, was named to the honor roll for the third time. Pontiff, a Metairie, La., native, also received Academic All-America recognition during his playing career.
Other former players receiving 2003 academic honor roll awards include pitcher Weylin Guidry (marketing), infielder Rocky Scelfo (general studies), pitcher David Miller (civil engineering), pitcher Justin Hill (general studies) and pitcher Lukas Guidroz (general studies).
Guidry, Miller and Hill each earned an LSU bachelor’s degree last year, as 36 former Tigers have graduated in the past three years.
Current LSU pitcher Chad Vaught, a senior from Ferriday, La., was also named to the 2003 honor roll. Vaught, a biology major, has made five relief appearances this season for the Tigers.
LSU baseball players have received a total 84 SEC Academic Honor Roll awards over the past 19 seasons.
