BATON ROUGE — Two current members of the 10th-ranked LSU softball team, along with four former players, were named to the 2003 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, it was announced by the league office on Thursday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career; 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification; and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2003 SEC Softball Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2001-02 academic calendar.
It was the fourth appearance on the Academic Honor Roll for former three-time All-American Britni Sneed. Sneed completed her playing career in 2002 for the Tigers and is currently serving as one of LSU’s student assistant coaches.
April Janzen made her third appearance on the honor roll, after earning the honor in 1999 and 2001. Janzen also completed her eligibility in 2002.
Current Tigers Julie Wiese and Tessa Lynam each earned the honor for the first time. Former LSU players Lindsey Howard and Sarah Meadors were also named to the honor roll for the first time. Neither is playing for the team this season.
The six players named to the list ties LSU for the fifth most by any school in the league. A total of 70 student-athletes from the 11 softball-playing member institutions garnered the honors.
Mississippi State led the way with nine players selected, followed by Kentucky, Ole Miss and South Carolina with eight each. Arkansas, Auburn and Georgia each had six representatives. Florida had five athletes on the list, while Alabama and Tennessee were each represented by four student-athletes.
