Men’s Golf 10th After Day 1 in ASU Indian Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. — The LSU men’s golf team finished day one of the ASU Indian Classic in 10th place after shooting a 15-over par 591 at the RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark on Monday.

The Tigers shot an 8-over par 296 in the morning round followed by a 7-over 295 in round two, finishing 16 strokes behind North Texas and Arkansas-Little Rock who sit atop the leaderboard after day one. The Mean Green and Trojans each fired a 1-under 575, respectively. Louisville is in second place after shooting an 8-over par 584, and Nebraska finished third at 9-over par. Host Arkansas State is in a three-way tie at 12-over par with Rice and Iowa State.

LSU was once again led by John Humphries who recovered to shoot a 2-under par 70 in round two after opening with a 1-over 73 in round one. The senior from Alexandria, La., sits in a seven-way tie overall at 1-under par.

Humphries, who continues to pace the Tigers, shot his 17th round in red figures this year and will look to improve that mark and earn his seventh top-20 finish of the season. Sophomore Heath West sits eight shots back of the leaders Gareth Maybin of South Alabama and Billy Zihala of Arkansas-Little Rock. West ended the day at 3-over par after shooting a 73-74 on Monday.

Sophomore Brandon Aydlett is tied for 43rd place after shooting a 6-over par 74-76 on day one. Freshman David Aitchinson shot a pair of 76s and is in 57th overall, and Tucker Ervin, playing in his fifth tournament of the season, shot a 10-over par 154 and is tied for 64th.

The 19-team field battled gusty conditions all day, and Tuesday’s forecast calls for more of the same with a steady wind at 15-20 mph. The Tigers will look to earn their fifth top-10 finish of the season and then head back home before regrouping for the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championships April 25-27 in Sea Island, Ga.
