Volleyball Assistant Johnson Takes Position at Texas

BATON ROUGE — LSU volleyball assistant coach Tonya Johnson has accepted an assistant coaches position at the University of Texas, as announced by Tiger head coach Fran Flory.

Johnson will oversee camps, travel, scouting and video breakdown as well as all aspects of strength and conditioning training at Texas.

Johnson was an assistant at LSU for five seasons, helping the Tigers advance through the ranks of the Southeastern Conference each season. Handling the majority of recruiting duties, the Zachary, La., native was responsible for recruiting most of the current Tiger roster.

A four-year letterwinner and former LSU team captain, Johnson was a member of the Tigers’ first Final Four team in 1990, winning SEC Championships in 1989 and 1990.

Johnson began her collegiate coaching career at the University of Kentucky in 1995 under Flory, where she spent three seasons before joining the Tiger staff in 1998. Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, she coached the Florida Gold Coast club team and assisted at Olympic Heights High School while teaching at Wellington Landings Middle School in Boca Raton, Fla.
