Track & Field Completes First Day at LSU Tiger Relays

BATON ROUGE — LSU had a solid return home Friday in their first day of competition in the LSU Tiger Relays in Bernie Moore Stadium. The Tigers and Lady Tigers had several top finishers in final events and many qualifiers for Saturday’s finals.

LSU brought out many of their top NCAA competitors for the first time in the young outdoor season.

“This is the time of year when we’re doing things to get ready for later in the season,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “We’re on a training cycle and if we are training like this now, good things could happen. The only bad news of the day was Pete Coley getting hurt,” Henry said.

Coley, an All-American, went down with an injury in the middle of the 200-meter dash. Henry said they were still unsure of the severity of his injury at the end of the night.

“We don’t know if it was a cramp or something more serious,” he said.

Either way, Coley will likely not  perform tomorrow, leaving a hole in LSU’s 4 x 400-meter and 4 x 100-meter relay teams.

The Tigers’ Henry Kenny won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a 9:20.88. Daniel Trosclair was second in the pole vault, and Luke Kinnard was second in the javelin. Matt Vincent was third in the javelin.

Lady Tigers Ashley Gardner was second in the Long jump, and Candice Gonzalez and Monet Rice finished second and third in the hammer throw.

The rest of the Tiger team will be in action tomorrow. The meet resumes at noon on Saturday.
