OXFORD, Miss. — The 17th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team will look to complete a Southeastern Conference weekend sweep on Sunday as the Tigers challenge the fifth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels at 1 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss.
“We’re going to come into this match with nothing to lose,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “Ole Miss is the No. 5-ranked team in the nation and they are playing some really good tennis right now. We have a bit of momentum after picking up a big win over Mississippi State and our guys know that this is a huge chance for us to make some waves in the SEC.”
LSU heads into Sunday’s Western Division rivalry with an overall record of 11-6 on the season and a 4-5 mark against SEC opponents. The Tigers are currently in the midst of a two-match winning streak after posting wins against No. 12 Kentucky, 4-2, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 4-3.
During the 2003 dual-match season, LSU has faced two opponents ranked in the top 10. The Tigers were defeated by second-ranked Florida, 7-0, on the road and then fell to the Vanderbilt Commodores, 5-2, at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium. Ole Miss, which has been ranked among the top 10 all season, lost to both Florida and Vanderbilt by identical scores of 4-3.
Ole Miss enters the contest with 15-3 overall record on the season and a 7-2 mark versus conference opponents. The Rebels have won three-consecutive SEC matches and are currently in sole possession of first place in the Western Division. On Friday, Ole Miss downed the Arkansas Razorbacks, 7-0, on the road in Fayetteville, Ark.
LSU owns a significant 42-6 advantage in its all-time series against Ole Miss. The Tigers have been victorious in six of the previous eight contests, but were defeated by a score of 4-3 last season in Baton Rouge.
The 17th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team will attempt to win its third-consecutive match over a nationally-ranked opponent on Sunday as the Tigers face off against the fifth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels at 1 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss.
