Duncan Wins First Match at Western Amateur

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Former LSU golfer Meredith Duncan opened her quest for a third straight Women’s Western Golf Association amateur title with an easy first-round match play win Wednesday.

Duncan, of Shreveport, the two-time defending champ, beat Jennifer Karr of Scottsdale, Ariz., 5 and 4. She will have to advance through two sets of matches on Thursday if she hopes to advance through to Friday’s semifinals.

LSU junior to be Devon Day of Greer, S.C., just missed making the field of 64 to match play for the Amateur title losing out early Wednesday morning in a six-player playoff for the final two spots.

Day is in the First Flight competition of 16 players and she won her opening round match 1-UP over Shelly Bonfantine.

Duncan’s calendar is very busy over the next few weeks as she will next week defend her North-South Amateur title before playing in the United States Women’s Open, an event she has received an exemption into after winning last year’s U. S. Women’s Amateur championship.
