More Than 1.1 Million Watch Tigers in 2001-02

BATON ROUGE — For the second consecutive year, LSU athletic events drew more than 1.1 million fans to Baton Rouge during the 2001-02 season.

For the 10 sports in which official attendance records are kept, 1,153,166 fans passed through the gates of LSU home sporting events in 2001-02. The 1.15 million fans breaks the previous school record of 1.11 million set last year.

LSU increased its regular-season attendance from the previous year in football, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, gymnastics, and track and field.

Football led the way with a school-record total attendance of 633,440 for its seven home games. LSU averaged 90,491 fans per game, a figure that ranked fifth in the nation. LSU also added another 28,868 fans for the Spring Game in April.

Baseball drew a total of 233,923 fans to Alex Box Stadium during the regular season and then added another 37,206 for the NCAA Regional.

Men’s basketball had 157,007 fans attend its games, including a season-high crowd of 12,696 against Ball State in the second round of the NIT, while the women’s basketball team drew 22,492 fans to the Maravich Assembly Center for the year.

Rounding out the attendance for LSU home sporting events were track and field at 13,048 fans, gymnastics with 11,385 fans, softball with 9,697 fans, volleyball at 3,562 fans and soccer with 2,538 fans.
