BATON ROUGE — LSU closer Jake Tompkins and three players signed by the Tigers last fall were selected Wednesday in the Major League Baseball draft. The 50-round draft, which began Tuesday, concluded at 5 p.m. CDT.
Tompkins, a junior right-hander from Auburn, Calif., was chosen in the 28th round (832nd pick) by the Texas Rangers. Tompkins, the Most Outstanding Player of last weekend’s NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, has a 7-1 mark with a 2.71 ERA and four saves.
LSU signees selected on Wednesday included right-hander pitcher Justin Gee of Sarasota (Fla.) High School (25th round, 757th pick, San Francisco Giants); right-handed pitcher Brandon Nall of Dothan-Wallace (Ala.) Community College (31st round, 935th pick, Atlanta Braves); and left-handed pitcher Clay Dirks of Hernando (Miss.) High School (42nd round, 1259th pick, Philadelphia Phillies).
LSU players selected on Tuesday included senior outfielder Sean Barker (sixth round, 171st pick) by the Colorado Rockies, junior right-handed pitcher Bo Pettit (13th round, 392nd pick) by the Minnesota Twins, junior left-handed pitcher Brad David (17th round, 515th pick) by the Atlanta Braves and junior third baseman Wally Pontiff (21st round, 638th pick) by the Oakland Athletics.
Four LSU signees were also selected on Tuesday, including shortstop Micah Schilling of Silliman Institute in Clinton, La. (1st round, 41st pick, Cleveland Indians); left-handed pitcher Kyle Pawelczyk of Chipola (Fla.) Junior College (3rd round, 84th pick, Anaheim Angels); right-handed pitcher Matt Capps of Alexander High School in Douglasville, Ga. (7th round, 193rd pick, Pittsburgh Pirates); and first baseman Josh Kreuzer of West Valley (Calif.) Junior College (16th round, 472nd pick, Texas Rangers).
