OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — For the second-straight year Britni Sneed was named a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I First-Team All-American, while Trena Peel earned Second-Team All-America honors, it was announced on Wednesday night at a banquet prior to the start of the Women’s College World Series.
Fifty-five players were named to the 2002 All-America first, second and third teams. All three teams were selected by National Fastpitch Coaches Association-member NCAA Division I coaching representatives, based on nominations from the 2002 season.
“Britni is the fourth first-team All-American pitcher I have coached in my career,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard, “and she is by far the best one I have ever coached.
“We are also just thrilled for Trena,” Girouard continued. “We always knew she had the talent to be an All-American and this year she went out on the field and proved it all year long.”
The SEC Pitcher of the Year and tournament MVP, Sneed completed the 2002 season with a 34-7 record. She is one of 10 finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award, which will be announced in June.
LSU’s second repeat first-team All-America selection (along with Ashlee Ducote), she struck out 478 on the year, breaking both the school and SEC single-season records.
Averaging 11.9 strikeouts per seven innings, she ranked second in the country in strikeout ratio with the fourth best single-season strikeout ratio in NCAA history. She completed her career with 1,370 strikeouts, putting her fourth in the NCAA career strikeout list.
The senior from Houston also threw a school-record six complete-game no-hitters along with 23 shutouts, tying her for 15th in NCAA single-season history. She led the SEC and ranked in the top 10 in the nation with an ERA of 0.75, the sixth lowest in SEC history.
The SEC Athlete of the Year, this is the first All-America honor of Peel’s career. Named to the SEC All-Tournament team, she was one of 25 semifinalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award.
The senior from Aurora, Colo., led the nation in triples this season with 14, two shy of the NCAA record. With that mark, she broke both the LSU and SEC single-season records and completed her career with 27 career triples, 13th in NCAA history.
Starting all 67 games for the Tigers in centerfield, Peel led the team in six offensive categories, including batting average, slugging percentage and stolen bases. She also recorded 24 multiple-hit games while tallying a team-best 12-game hitting streak.
Both players have been invited to participate in the USA Softball World Championship Team camp this summer. Sneed participated on the USA National Blue team last summer, touring through the United States, Canada and Venezuela. Peel was a member of the USA National Red team last summer, traveling through the continental United States, Canada and Hawaii.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association names more than 300 first-, second- and third-team All-Americans in NCAA Divisions I, II and III as well as in NAIA, NJCAA, California Community College, Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and high school.
