BATON ROUGE — Six current or former LSU baseball players were named Monday to the 2002 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. A total of 99 players received academic recognition from the league office.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the past year, or a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for his career; 2) be a sophomore or higher in terms of academic classification; and 3) have 24 semester hours toward a degree.
The current LSU players qualifying for the award are junior pitcher Brad David (3.13 GPA in management), senior pitcher Justin Hill (3.49 GPA in general studies), senior pitcher David Miller (3.14 GPA in civil engineering), junior third baseman Wally Pontiff (3.25 GPA in biology) and junior pitcher Chad Vaught (3.53 GPA in zoology).
Former LSU pitcher Tim Nugent (3.16 GPA in general business) also qualified for the award, which was based on grades from the 2000-2001 academic calendar.
The Tigers, ranked No. 9 this week by Baseball America magazine, begin postseason play Wednesday at 5 p.m., as LSU meets Auburn in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Birmingham, Ala.
