Men's Golf Opens Season at Bank of Tennessee

Jones, West Take State’s Top Golf Honors

LAKE CHARLES, La. — The LSU men’s golf team picked up two of the top four individual awards on the 2002 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Golf Team, it was announced by the LSWA on Saturday.

LSU head coach Greg Jones was named the state’s Coach of the Year for the second-straight season. In just his third season in Baton Rouge, Jones led LSU to two tournament victories and a second-consecutive NCAA regional appearance. Tiger true freshman Heath West was named the 2002 Freshman of the Year. The Dothan, Ala., native, led LSU this season in stroke average (72.1) and had three top-10 finishes. He was also named Second Team All-SEC this season.

Andy Smith of Southeastern Louisiana University was named the 2002 Golfer of the Year. Smith, a first team member of the All-Southland Conference Team, had five top-10 finishes in the spring as well as a 71.2 stroke average. SLU’s Mark O’Sullivan was named Newcomer of the Year. Tiger senior Nathan Goulding was named to the first team along with West, marking the second straight season that two LSU golfers have made the first team. Goulding was the 2001 Newcomer of the Year after transferring from Midland Junior College in Midland, Texas.

Junior John Humphries was named to the second team, the second year in a row he has earned that honor. McNeese State’s Adrien Mork joined West and Goulding on the first team. He was named to the second team a season ago. Also making the first team was Chris Wheeler of Tulane.

LSU placed 16th at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional on Saturday at Little Rock, Ark.
