Men’s Golf Creeps Up to 16th at NCAA Regional

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a second-round 4-over par 292 to finish the day in a tie for 16th place after two rounds at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional being held at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock.

The Tigers, tied for 18th place after Thursday’s first round, could not pick up much ground on a rainy day in Little Rock. Rain delayed the start of the second round by about an hour and then the field was delayed again at 6 p.m. Twelve of the 27 teams in the field were unable to finish their round on Friday and will finish on Saturday morning before playing their third round.

Junior John Humphries shot the best round of the day for LSU on Friday, firing a 2-under 70 to jump from a tie for 67th place to a tie for 36th after two rounds. Senior Nathan Goulding and redshirt freshman Jason Horrell each shot 1-over 73s on Friday. Goulding is currently tied for 46th place at 5-over par 147. Horrell is tied for 64th place. True freshman Heath West shot a 4-over 76, and is tied for 85th place. Junior Garrett Prather shot a 5-over 77 and is in 111th place.

Oklahoma State currently leads the regional at 8-under par 568. Purdue is one stroke back at 7-under 569. Oklahoma is third and Baylor and Toledo are tied for fourth place.

Purdue teammates Lee Williamson and Chris Mayson are currently 1-2 in the individual leaderboard after two rounds. Williamson shot a 5-under 67 in round two and is leading the tournament at 5-under 137. Mayson fired a 7-under 65 on Friday, the lowest round of the regional to date, to move into second place. He is one stroke behind his teammate for the individual lead.

The third and final round will begin just after 8 a.m. on Saturday. The top 10 teams from the regional will advance to the 2002 NCAA Championships to be held May 29-June 1 at Columbus, Ohio.
