BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s tennis team returns home after two-match road trip on Wednesday, as the Tigers host the Southern Methodist Mustangs at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
LSU returns to Baton Rouge after dropping close Southeastern Conference matches against No. 7 Kentucky, 4-2, and Vanderbilt, 4-3, over the weekend.
With the hard-fought losses, the Tigers fell to an overall record of 5-10 on the season.
The Tigers have faced 10 opponents ranked among the nation’s top-25 teams this season and recorded a crucial upset over 23rd-ranked South Florida in their previous non-conference matchup. With the pivotal 5-2 win, LSU improved to a 5-2 record against opponents outside of the SEC.
Southern Methodist comes to Baton Rouge with an overall record of 12-11 on the season. In their most-recent contest, the Mustangs edged Rice, 4-3, at home at the Haggar Tennis Stadium. With the close victory, Southern Methodist upped its record to 2-0 against Western Athletic Conference foes.
Last season, the Tigers were defeated by Southern Methodist, 4-2, on the road in Dallas, Texas. The Mustangs were the ninth-ranked team in the nation at the time and handed LSU its sixth loss of the season. With the win, Southern Methodist gained a slight 6-5 lead in the all-time series between the non-conference rivals.
The Mustangs’ Krystian Pfeiffer enters Wednesday’s non-conference duel as the 26th-ranked singles player in the nation. The Southern Methodist senior possesses an overall record of 15-6 on the season.
LSU’s 87th-ranked Dan Kiernan will lead the Tigers against Southern Methodist and holds a 14-13 overall record on the season. Kiernan is currently 5-8 against opponents ranked among the top 100.
Southern Methodist also boasts one of the country’s top-ranked doubles teams. The duo of Johan Brunstrom and Eric Cohn heads into Wednesday’s contest as the No. 9-doubles pair in the nation.
