BATON ROUGE — LSU true freshman Heath West was named the Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced in a release on Wednesday.
West, a true freshman from Dothan, Ala., finished 11th at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational this past weekend at Tuscaloosa, Ala., shooting even-par 213. It was the first collegiate tournament for West in his home state, leading LSU to a fourth-place finish.
West, a candidate for SEC Freshman of the Year, leads the LSU team with a 72.0 stroke average. He also has four top-20 finishes, which is tied for team-best, and is tied for second on the squad with two top-10 finishes. He also has nine rounds of par or better this season, out of 22 rounds, which is second-best on the team. West also has the seventh-best stroke average in the SEC this season.
West is the second LSU golfer to earn the award this season, as senior Nathan Goulding was named Golfer of the Week on Feb. 13.
The Tigers (23rd in GolfWorld Poll, 36th Golfweek), head to the Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational on March 23-24 at Statesboro, Ga.
