TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The 23rd-ranked LSU men’s golf team shot a final-round 3-over par 287 on Sunday at the Capstone Club to finish in fourth place at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Tigers finished the event with an 11-over 863 total, finishing 16 strokes behind tournament champion Minnesota. Host Alabama finished second, at 5-under 847 with Toledo. Michigan State rounded out the top five at 12-over. Alabama-Birmingham’s Graeme McDowell claimed medalist honors with a 12-under 201 total. McDowell shot a tournament-low round of 6-under 65 on Sunday to edge Kentucky’s John Holmes by two strokes. McDowell shot a 68 in each of the first two rounds.
LSU junior John Humphries was the team’s best finisher at 5-under par 208 in fourth place. It marks Humphries’ second-straight top-10 finish this month, and second this season. He tied for first place at the LSU Spring Invitational two weeks ago in Baton Rouge. Humphries fired a final-round 1-under 70 on Sunday. True freshman Heath West, a native of Dothan, Ala., continues to make a strong bid for Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year after finishing 11th at even-par 213. West shot a 1-under 70 on Sunday. West now has four top-10 finishes this season, and just missed his third top-10 finish of the season.
Senior Nathan Goulding tied for 31st place at 6-over par 219. Garrett Prather finished in a tie for 46th place at 11-over 224, and Jason Horrell finished 65th at 17-over 230. LSU was tied for third place after Friday’s opening round, and were fourth after Saturday’s play.
“We had a pretty good day today, but we still did not string enough low rounds together to have a shot to win,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We are still working on getting good numbers from all five guys in our lineup, but we had some real good scores here overall.”
Next up for LSU is the Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational on March 23-24 at Statesboro, Ga.
