FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — LSU sprint phenom Muna Lee broke the NCAA Indoor Championship record in the 200-meter dash, becoming just the third Lady Tiger to win the event while Walter Davis finished second in the men’s long jump to highlight the first day of action at the Randal Tyson Center.
Combined with a third place finish from Stephanie Durst in the 200-meter final and a fourth place finish from Lolo Jones in the 60-meter hurdles, the Lady Tigers find themselves in the hunt for their first NCAA Indoor title since 1997 heading into the final day of competition.
The Lady Tigers lead the women’s competition with 21 points heading into Saturday while Florida is right behind with 20 points.
The men used Davis’ runner-up and the strength of its quarter-milers to put together a productive first day that left them with eight points and a majority of its points for the taking tomorrow. The Tigers are tied for 10th.
Alabama had a commanding first day and leads the event with 26 points followed by Arkansas and Tennessee.
“We had just about as good a day as we could have had,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “We had one or two slight mishaps, but those things happen. I
think the positives definitely outweighed one or two negatives. Our athletes really stepped up to the task today and we’ve put ourselves in position to have a successful day tomorrow.”
Lee broke former Lady Tiger great Peta-Gaye Dowdie’s school and NCAA Championship mark of 22.82 en route to winning her first individual NCAA title. Her time is just off the overall NCAA record of 22.79 by Merlene Ottey of Nebraska in 1982.
The sophomore All-American exploded out of the blocks and made up the stagger on her competitors by the end of the first turn. She ran away from the field down the homestretch en route to her record-setting time. The time also ranks fourth on the world list currently.
“Muna Lee is the real deal,” added Henry. “That’s an absolutely amazing time for someone of any age to run, forget that she is only a sophomore. She is an incredible competitor.”
She had advanced to the final earlier by blowing away the field in the prelims with a time of 22.95.
Durst finished third in a time of 23.00, a personal best as LSU nearly became the first school to have two sub-23 second sprinters at the same time. Durst was just .01 away from giving LSU a 1-2 finish in the event, as Rachelle Boone of Indiana ran a time of 22.99 in the first section of the final.
Elsewhere on the women’s side, Lolo Jones gave the Lady Tigers their first points of the NCAA Indoor Championships with a fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. The sophomore got out of the blocks well and ran a significant personal best time of 8.05.
The time equals former NCAA champion and LSU All-American Kim Carson for the second best time in school history. Perdita Felicien of Illinois won the event an NCAA record time of 7.90. Jones extended LSU’s longest active streak of consecutive All-Americans in the event, the 17th straight year LSU has had an All-American in the event.
On the men’s side, Davis matched his second place effort of a year ago in the long jump, breaking his school record in the process.
Just two weeks earlier Davis had fouled three times at the SEC Indoor Championships on the very same runway. He put himself against the wall on Friday once again by fouling on his first two attempts. Staring another difficult outing in the face, the 2000 Olympian nailed his third attempt to the tune of 26 feet 9 inches and moved into the lead temporarily.
Davis was unable to improve on the mark in the final and finished second to collegiate record-holder Miguel Pate of Alabama who won the event with a mark of 27-4 1/2. Davis’ jump bettered his own school mark of 26-8 1/2, set in winning the SEC Indoor title last year.
The Tigers looked particularly sharp in the men’s 400-meter dash as collegiate record holder and National Indoor Track Athlete of the Year Alleyne Francique ran a blazing time of 45.70 to win his preliminary heat and post the fastest time on the day.
Pete Coley easily won his heat in a time of 46.07, the second fastest time of the day, while Lueroy Colquhoun shook up the form charts by making the 400-meter final and give the Tigers three of the eight positions on Saturday.
Marian Burnett kick-started the Lady Tigers in the opening event of the day on the track, winning her section of the 800-meter run, while posting the fastest qualifying time overall on the day. The SEC champion started off conservative but used the same kick over the final 200 meter she used in winning the conference title two weeks ago to win comfortable in a time of 2:05.16.
Burnett’s time is the second fastest in LSU history. On Saturday she will attempt to become the Lady Tigers’ first indoor national champion in the event.
The Lady Tigers were dealt a surprising blow in the 400-meter dash when All-American Ronetta Smith failed to qualify for the final in the event. Smith entered with the third best mark in the nation, but finished fourth in her heat in a time of 53.47.
Smith finished third in the quarter at the SEC Indoor Championships just two weeks ago and finished fourth at the 2001 NCAA Indoor meet. In the only other final involving an LSU athlete, Claston Bernard finished 14th in the high jump with a best mark of 6-10 1/4.
The NCAA Indoor Championships continue on Saturday with another busy day for LSU athletes. Walter Davis will attempt to defend his NCAA title in the triple jump while the 400 and 4×400-meter relays should provide big points for the Tigers.
On the women’s side, the Lady Tigers will run in the finals of the 60 and 800 with the 4×400-meter relay on tap as well. In the field the Lady Tigers will send three athletes into the triple jump competition in a critical event in their bid for the NCAA team title.
