Johnson Repeats as LSWA Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — For the second straight week, Lady Tiger Temeka Johnson was named the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced on Thursday afternoon.

The sophomore from New Orleans led the Lady Tigers to the SEC Tournament championship game for the first time since 1991 on her way to being named to the SEC All-Tournament team. She finished the tournament averaging 17.7 points, 6.3 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals while playing all 40 minutes in LSU’s three games in three days.

In LSU’s upset victory over No. 3 Tennessee, she recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds and tied her career-high with four steals. In the tournament championship game against No. 6 Vanderbilt, she recorded a career-high 22 points. To start the tournament, she scored 13 points with seven assists against Kentucky.

She leads the SEC in assists per game and ranks third nationally in assists per game at 7.5. She also ranks second in assists by a sophomore in LSU school history and is tied for fourth in single-season assists in school history despite playing in just 22 games this season.

This is the second consecutive LSWA Player of the Week honor for Johnson and the third straight honor for a Lady Tiger. Junior Aiysha Smith earned the honor two weeks ago.

With a fourth place finish in league play and an impressive run through the SEC Tournament, LSU now waits for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air on ESPN on Sunday at 4 p.m.
