EUGENE, Ore. — Former LSU All-American Derrick Brew put himself in position for a spot on the United States’ 4×400-meter relay team at this summer’s World Championships, finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash on day three of competition at the GMC Envoy USA Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Brew finished fourth for the second time in the last three years, clocking a consistent 45.35-second time, just off the time he registered in Friday’s semifinal. After finishing fourth two years ago, Brew was selected for the U.S. 4×400-meter relay team at the World Championships in Seville, Spain.
In addition, Myra Combs, a member of the 2001 Lady Tiger squad, earned a spot in Sunday’s 200-meter final with a strong showing on Saturday. Combs will attempt to make her first U.S. team after finishing fourth in her heat on Saturday, running a time of 23.33 under legal winds.
Former LSU thrower Delyle Woods finished sixth in the men’s javelin on Saturday, coming up with a throw of 234 feet 2 inches, a season best for the native of DeRidder, La. Former Louisiana-Monroe All-American Breaux Greer won the event with a throw of 279-7, while Tom Pukstys, a former Baton Rouge resident who trained at LSU, finished second with a throw of 244-5.
Regan Nicolls, an All-American intermediate hurdler for the Tigers from 1995-96, finished eighth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles posting a time of 50.44.
In preliminary action, a pair of former Lady Tiger national champions both advance to the 100-meter hurdle Sunday’s semifinals, as Joyce Bates and Kim Carson both advanced. Bates finished third in her heat in a time of 13.19, while Carson finished fourth in her heat in a time of 13.07.
The GMC Envoy USA Track and Field Championships conclude on Sunday with several athletes with LSU ties still to compete. 2001 NCAA triple jump champion Walter Davis will attempt to finish in the top three and make his second straight United States squad, while former Tiger All-American and 2000 NCAA pole vault champion Russ Buller looks to make his first.
