Combs Finishes Ninth in Long Jump at US Nationals

EUGENE, Ore. — Former LSU All-American Myra Combs finished ninth in the women’s long jump, as action got underway Thursday at the GMC/Envoy USA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Combs, who concluded her LSU career just under three weeks ago on the very same track, came up with a jump of 19 feet 9 inches on an unusually warm day in which temperatures soared into the 90s.

In other action involving LSU athletes on Thursday, Derrick Brew advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 400-meter dash, as did Regan Nicholls in the men’s 400-meter hurdles.

Brew finished third in his heat in a time of 45.34 seconds but actually posted the fourth fastest overall time of the five heats run on Thursday, finishing behind Andrew Pierce of adidas and Leonard Byrd of Nike who posted times of 45.07 and 45.11 respectively.

Nicholls finished third in his heat as well, posting a time of 50.38 to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

In addition to Brew and Nicholls who will both run semifinals on Friday, Walter Davis begins his quest to make the United States’ squad in both horizontal jumps for the second straight year when he competes in the long jump. Davis finished third in the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials a year  ago.
