BATON ROUGE — Four LSU players were selected Wednesday during the second day of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft, including first baseman Bryan Moore (22nd round – Cardinals), pitcher Shane Youman (43rd round – Pirates), outfielder Sean Barker (46th round – Blue Jays) and pitcher Billy Brian (47th round – Indians).
Rounds 21-50 of the 50-round draft were conducted Wednesday after rounds 1-20 were completed on Tuesday.
Four LSU players were also selected Tuesday, including second baseman Mike Fontenot (first round – Orioles), outfielder Todd Linden (supplemental first round – Giants), shortstop Ryan Theriot (third round – Cubs) and pitcher Jason Scobie (15th round – Mets).
Moore was LSU’s leading hitter this season, batting .373 (90-for-241) with 25 doubles, seven homers and 50 RBI. The junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., earned 2001 second-team all-SEC recognition.
Youman, a junior from New Iberia, La., was 3-2 with a 5.17 ERA while recording 33 strikeouts in 54 innings. Barker, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., batted .338 (27-for-80), with seven doubles, one triple, three homers and 16 RBI.
Brian, a junior from Covington, La., posted no decisions in 15 innings of work, as he was plagued by injuries througout the season.
Two LSU signees were chosen Wednesday, including pitcher Chad Gaudin of Crescent City High School in Harahan, La. (34th round – Devil Rays) and pitcher Jason Vargas of Apple Valley, Calif. (43rd round – Twins).
Six LSU signees were selected Tuesday, including catcher Jonathan de Vries of Irvine, Calif. (third round – Red Sox); catcher Jonathan Zeringue of E.D. White High School in Thibodaux, La. (third round – White Sox); outfielder Jay Mattox of Conway, Ark., (fourth round – White Sox); outfielder Chamar McDonald of Madison, Miss. (fifth round – Royals); outfielder Austin Nagle of Barbe High School in Lake Charles, La. (sixth round – Athletics); and pitcher Billy Simon of Wellington, Fla. (ninth round – Red Sox).
Five of the Tigers’ junior college recruits signed pro contracts before the 2001 draft and will not enroll at LSU. They include pitcher Jon Asahina of Fresno City College (Florida Marlins), pitcher Sean Henn of McLennan JC (New York Yankees), pitcher Zach Parker of San Jacinto JC (Colorado Rockies), pitcher Trevor Tacker of McLennan JC (New York Yankees) and outfielder Neesan Zieour of Sacramento City College (Toronto Blue Jays).
