Davis, Albergamo Named to SEC 20-Year Team

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Wendell Davis and Nacho Albergamo, former All-Americans for the Tigers during the mid-1980’s, have been named to the Southeastern Conference 20-Year Team chosen by Lindy’s college football publication, the magazine announced this week.

Davis, who was named the SEC’s Most Valuable Player in 1987, earned All-America honors in both 1986 and 1987. He set an LSU record with 1,244 yards receiving in 1986 and he followed that with 944 yards in 1987. For his career, Davis totaled 2,708 yards receiving to go with 19 touchdowns, with both marks still standing as LSU records. Davis’ 2,708 yards receiving ranks fourth in SEC history and his career average of 113.1 yards receiving a contest ranks third in league history.

Albergamo was a consensus All-America pick at center for the Tigers in 1987. Albergamo anchored a fearsome offensive line for the Tigers that paved the way to a school-record 4,843 yards of total offense in 1987 as LSU posted a 10-1-1 mark and beat South Carolina in the Gator Bowl.

Albergamo was also named the 1987 Toyota National Leader of the Year and he was one of 11 recipients of the 1987 National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Awards.

Davis and Albergamo are joined on the squad by three Heisman Trophy winners and three Outland Award winners. Alabama and Georgia led with five players selected to the 26-player team, while Auburn and Florida had three each.

The two-decade all-star team was chosen in conjunction with the 20th year anniversary of Lindy’s, one of the nation’s leading and fastest growing sports publications. Players were selected by Lindy’s editorial staff based on their college performance during the 1982-2000 seasons.

The 26-player squad is featured in Lindy’s 2001 Southeastern college edition, which is currently available on newstands throughout the South.
