OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The LSU softball team will attempt to make a comeback on Saturday after falling to Stanford, 2-1, in the first game of the Women’s College World Series at the Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Tigers face the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 1:30 p.m. match-up.
“We have put the last game behind us and are ready to go out and play some Tiger ball,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “These girls are warriors and will not go down without a huge fight. I told them we just have to take the game one pitch at a time.”
The game will be broadcast live by the LSU Sports Network on 107.3 FM in Baton Rouge and over the Internet at www.LSUsports.net.
LSU enters the contest with a record of 57-10 led by senior shortstop Stephanie Hastings at the plate. Hastings is hitting .386 and has 16 doubles and 48 RBI. Junior April Janzen had a good outing on Thursday, getting three hits and scoring a run for LSU. Britni Sneed continues to dominate in the circle with an ERA of 0.68 and 386 strikeouts.
The Hawkeyes enter the game with a record of 49-13 after falling to UCLA, 2-0, in their first game. They are led by Katy Jendrzejewsk at the plate, hitting .389. Kristi Hanks is the ace on the pitching staff, hurling over 270 innings for an ERA of 0.75.
LSU and Iowa have never met in action on the field. Should LSU win the contest with Iowa, the Tigers will face the defending-national champion Oklahoma Sooners at 8:30 p.m. The Tigers are 2-1 all-time against the Sooners, last beating them 3-0 in Norman in 2000. Oklahoma fell to the losers bracket after falling to Arizona, 5-4, in an extra-inning nail bitter.
The latter game will be televised live by ESPN on Cable Channel 36 in Baton Rouge. The LSU Sports Network will also broadcast the game on 107.3 FM and over the Internet at www.LSUsports.net.
