Men’s Golf Moves Up One Spot at NCAA Regional

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a second round 11-over par 299 on Friday to place 22nd after two rounds at the East Regional at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va.

After two rounds, the Tigers stand 33 shots out of 10th place, the final position that will advance to the 30-team NCAA Championship.

The Tigers improved by five strokes on Friday,shooting a 299 Friday after posting a 304 on Thursday. The Tigers are 27-over par through two rounds, with a total score of 603. The Tigers are 51 shots behind leader East Tennessee State, who is 24-under par.

ETSU shot a 10-under par 278 Friday. North Carolina State and Florida stand in second and third place, while Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are tied for fifth place.

LSU was led by senior Craig Taylor on Friday, as he shot an even- par 72. Taylor shot a 77 on Thursday. Junior Nathan Goulding shot a 1-over par 73, improving by two shots from Thursday’s 75 round.

Billy Dressler shot a 6-over 78 Friday, while Alan Morgan posted his second straight 77 on Friday.

“We had a few guys play better today, but we still did not do exactly what we wanted to do”, said head coach Greg Jones. “We are part of a real tough field here, and when you do not play real well, it is hard to move up. This is a tough field, and we knew that when we saw the pairings, I hope we can finish strong tomorrow.”

The Tigers are one of five Southeastern Conference schools participating in the East Regional at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s Green Course. Top-ranked Georgia shot a 1-over par 289 Friday to finish the round in sixth place. The Bulldogs won the 2001 SEC Championship last month at Sea Island, Ga.

LSU will play the third and final round Friday. LSU is making its first appearance in an NCAA Regional since 1998, and the first under Jones.
