Hawthorne Named Louisiana Broadcaster of the Year

SALISBURY, N.C. — LSU’s “Voice of the Tigers” will be absent from his duties this weekend on the LSU Sports Network as he travels here to receive an award from the National Association of Sportscasters and Sports Writers.

Hawthorne, associated with LSU radio broadcasts starting with his call of LSU basketball during the 1979-80 season, has been named the Broadcaster of the Year in the state of Louisiana by the group and the Louisiana native is taking a rare weekend away from the microphone to accept the award.

Dave Moormann of the Alexandria Town Talk is the Louisiana recipient of the Sports Writer of the Year honor.

“It’s certainly very humbling to be honored like this,” said Hawthorne. “To be able to attend this function and be there with some of the people you have always admired in this busy is something special.”

In Hawthorne’s abscence this weekend on the network, Patrick Wright will move from his softball play-by-play duties to handle the baseball series at Alabama, while in Baton Rouge, Kevin Ford and Doug Moreau will call the LSU Spring Football Game.
