It’s Gameday: 2001 LSU Football Spring Game

BATON ROUGE — The LSU football team will play its final game inside Tiger Stadium before the 2001 opener on Sept. 1 against arch rival Tulane when the Tigers play the 2001 LSU Football Spring Game on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets purchased on Saturday will be $10. LSU student tickets are $3. All proceeds go to benefit LSU’s new Academic Center for Athletes.

“I’m very pleased with the progress we made this spring” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “We had a lot of carryover from the fall. I think having a good spring is a good indicator as to what the player’s attitude is toward the future.”

Saturday’s Spring Game will feature four 15-minute quarters with a 15-minute halftime. The clock will be on running-time except on change of possessions and the final three minutes of each half. Saban said the teams, named Purple and White, were drafted on Thursday and the winner of Saturday’s game will eat steak at dinner one day next week, while the losing team will eat beans.

“The main thing that we want to see on Saturday is the players compete against each other and see who can take to the field and play when the game’s going to be decided,” Saban said. “I think that’s a big part of mental toughness. A lot of guys can play well in practice, but they can’t ramp it up a notch in a game. Even though it’s a not a real game, it’s better than a regular practice.

“We would love to see a big crowd and I think the players would appreciate the support.”
