Men’s Golf 12th Through Two Rounds at Schenkel

STATESBORO, Ga.– The 14th ranked LSU men’s golf team shot a 16-over par 592 Saturday to place 12th after two rounds at the 2001 Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

The Tigers are 25 shots behind co-leaders Clemson and defending champ Georgia. Georgia, the nation’s No. 1 team, and the Tigers of Clemson a 9-under par 567 to top the leaderboard after 36 holes.

Clemson is currently ranked third in the country by Mastercard. Host school Georgia Southern placed third, shooting a 5-under 571. Florida is fourth followed by Northwestern. Georgia’s Nick Cassini is at the top of the individual standings, shooting a 7167 for a 138 total. He is 6-under par through two rounds.

Cassini’s teammate, Bryant Odom is tied for second with Dustin Bray of North Carolina. Bray and Odom posted totals of 139. The Tigers best individual placement Saturday was senior Craig Taylor, at 28th place. He shot back-to-back 73’s for a score of 146.

Host Georgia Southern defended their home course, Forest Heights Country Club with a 285 score in the first round, their best score at the Schenkel since 1989,the same year the Tigers captured the team title.

Tiger junior Nathan Goulding tied for 30th, shooting 77-70. Alan Morgan placed 38th, shooting a 72-76. John Humphries is in 55th place, posting scores of 77-74, and Garrett Prather is 76th, shooting an 80 and an 81.

The final round of the Schenkel will conclude at 8:00 a.m. Sunday with the top three teams, Georgia, Georgia Southern and Clemson teeing off together. The 2001 Schenkel includes six teams in the Mastercard top ten, and 13 of the country’s top 20 individual golfers.
