Tigers Break Course Record; Hold Second Place at TOC

Tigers Tied For Seventh at Billy Hitchcock; Morgan Second

OPELIKA, Ala. — The 20th ranked LSU men’s golf team shot a second round score of 291 Saturday to finish the day tied for seventh place at the 2001 Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate held at the Saugahatchee Country Club. The Tigers shot a 296 in the first round Friday to finish in eighth place.

Senior Alan Morgan shot a 70 Saturday, and is tied for second place with Auburn’s Kevin Haefner at 3-under par. Morgan shot a 71 in the first round, and was in a six-way tie for seventh. Auburn, the host and defending champion is tied with Georgia State for first place at 6-under par.

Alabama-Birmingham is three shots behind the co-leaders at 3-under par. Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana round out the top five.

Auburn’s Payton Osborn, the individual leader after round one, fired a 72 Saturday and stayed atop the leaderboard. He is 5-under par, two shots ahead of Morgan and Haefner. Osborn shot a 67 in the first round Friday.

Morgan is looking for his third individual title and seventh top-10 finish of the season.

LSU’s Nathan Goulding and Craig Taylor are tied for 28th place after two rounds. Goulding shot a 73 Saturday to finish 4-over par. He shot a first-round 75. Taylor has shot consecutive 74’s to sit four-over with his teammate. Garrett Prather shot a 74 Saturday, and is tied for 38th place. John Humphries is 8-over par after shooting a 76 in both rounds.

The Tigers are tied for seventh with SEC foe South Carolina. The 12-team tournament features six teams from the SEC. Auburn will try to win consecutive Billy Hitchcock titles Sunday. LSU and Auburn will meet again April 19-22 at the SEC Championships in Sea Island, Ga. The Tigers finished fifth last year in the SEC Championships played in Killen, Ala.

The 12 teams tee off at 8 a.m. Sunday to complete the tournament.
