BATON ROUGE — Junior pitcher Britni Sneed and freshman Sarah Meadors combined for the first perfect game in Tiger history to lead the eighth-ranked LSU softball team to a 9-0 win over Tennessee in five innings on Sunday in Tiger Park.
“This was a great ending to a beautiful weekend,” said head coach Yvette Girouard. “We played great defense and the pitching was awesome. I was also pleased with our hitting today. I am surprised that this was the first perfect game here, considering the talent that has been in the circle here. Everyone stepped up to the challenge in key situations, and we had good substitutions. The overall team effort was amazing for the weekend.”
LSU improves to 23-5 overall and 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee falls to 12-17 overall and 2-4 in the SEC.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead early in the first inning after Aleshia Perry was hit by a pitch and Stephanie Hastings singled to left field to put runners on first and second. Megann Steege picked up two RBI when she singled to left field to send home Perry and Hastings.
It was Steege once again in the bottom of the third who came up with the hit to send Hastings in for a pile up to score at home. LSU scored six runs off six hits in the bottom of the fourth to clinch the 9-0 win.
Sneed worked four innings in the win to improve her record to 14-4 with four strikeouts on the day. Meadors relieved her in the fifth inning to complete the perfect game.
The Tiger bats came alive, combining for nine hits off Lady Vol pitchers Nicole Borg and Stephanie Humphrey. Steege was two-for-three at the plate with three RBI. Hastings went two-for-two with one RBI. Jill Crawford hit her second double of the year.
The Tigers will take to the road this weekend for a spring break trip to South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Georgia. LSU will return home for a mid-week SEC game with Arkansas on April 3.
