COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The LSU men’s swimming and diving team ended the opening day of the 2001 NCAA Championships in 22nd place on Thursday at the Student Rec Center here in College Station, Texas.

“We did a very good job today,” said LSU head coach Jeff Cavana. “The swimmers did a great job of competing and the divers did an excellent job in the 1-meter competition. I was especially impressed with the way that Evan (Martinec) performed in the relay events.”

In the 1-meter springboard diving event, the Tigers’ Erik Petursson ended the competition in 10th place with a final score of 294.60. LSU’s Corey Fox finished the event in 14th place by finishing with a total score of 285.30.

The Tigers’ talented freshman, Evan Martinec, set a school record in the 400-yard individual medley relay event by swimming a time of 47.91.

Martinec is the first-Tiger freshman to compete in the NCAA Championships since Rodrigo Castro in 1999.
