Elite 8 Lady Tigers Begin Practice

Ferdinand Named AP Second Team All-America

BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s basketball senior guard Marie Ferdinand was selected to the Associated Press All-America Second Team, it was announced Tuesday.

Ferdinand, a Miami, Fla., native, led LSU in scoring (20.7), assists (3.6) and steals (2.9) on the year while ranking second in rebounds (5.1).

She has also been named first-team All-SEC, a Naismith Finalist, and a finalist for Shooting Guard of the Year by ESPN the Magazine.

Notre Dame’s Ruth Riley was selected as AP Player of the Year and was a unanmious first-team All-America selection.

She was joined on the first team by national scoring leader Jackie Stiles of Southwest Missouri State, Kelly Miller of Georgia, Katie Douglas of Purdue and Stacey Dales of Oklahoma.

Selected for the second team were LaToya Thomas of Mississippi State, Marie Ferdinand of Louisiana State Chantelle Anderson of Vanderbilt, Tamika Catchings of Tennessee and Svetlana Abrosimova of Connecticut. Chosen for the third team were Deanna Jackson of Alabama-Birmingham, Angie Welle of Iowa State, Sue Bird of Connecticut, Georgia Schweitzer of Duke and Niele Ivey of Notre Dame.

The Lady Tigers face No. 11 seed Arizona State on Friday at 5 p.m. CT in the first round of the 2001 Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind.
