BATON ROUGE — Rohan Davey completed 12 of 25 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns and LaBrandon Toefield rushed for 81 yards on nine carries to lead LSU in its first scrimmage of the spring here Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
Head coach Nick Saban put his Tigers through a 121-play scrimmage that saw LSU spend a portion of the session on third-and-long situations, red-zone situations, goalline situations and the two-minute drill.
“I was pleased with some of the things that some of the players were able to do out there today,” Saban said. “I thought (LaBrandon) Toefield ran the ball really well. I thought Domanick (Davis) played well on both sides of the ball when he got the opportunity. I think (Rohan Davey) played pretty well for the most part. He had control of the team when he was out there.
“I thought the competitive spirit was good and the effort was good. It has been a hot spring so far and we had a hot practice yesterday and another one today. I was pleased with the way the players worked themselves through it.”
Davey, leading the No. 1 offense, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Robert Royal for one score and the duo connected again on a 24-yard scoring strike with no time left on the clock as the Tigers worked on the two-minute drill.
Ryan O’Neal, who is playing fullback this spring after shifting from linebacker, caught a 3-yard TD pass from Matt Mauck for LSU’s other score through the air.
On the ground, fullback Elice Parker scored three touchdowns, all on short-yardage situations during the scrimmage. Parker finished with seven yards rushing on three carries. Derron Parquet was second on the squad with 55 yards on 13 carries, while Domanick Davis had 25 yards on five carries. Davis, who played both ways during the scrimmage, also had one tackle.
Royal led all receivers with 97 yards on four receptions, two of which went for touchdowns, while Jack Hunt hauled in four passes for 77 yards. Josh Reed has three receptions for 47 yards and Corey Webster had three catches for 41 yards.
“I thought the receivers played pretty well,” Saban said. “They made some good plays and they made some good catches.”
Defensively, linebacker Walter Moreham and cornerback Randall Gay each came up with interceptions, while Moreham, Kyle Kipps, Jarvis Green, Chad Lavalais and Kenderick Allen were all credited with one sack. Linebacker Bradie James led the Tiger defense with six tackles, while Moreham had five stops and Trev Faulk four tackles.
“I thought the hitting on defense was good,” Saban said. “The effort was good from the first group. They didn’t always execute like we would like from a veteran group. They made a lot of good plays, but they gave up a few plays that we need to address because giving up big plays is one of the areas that we have to improve on for next year.”
John Corbello and Kris Kessler each converted on a pair of field goals. Kessler kicked a 43-yard field goal and a 33-yarder, while Corbello was true on a 25-yarder and an 18-yarder.
Saturday’s scrimmage was the first of three scheduled for the Tigers as LSU will scrimmage again next Saturday followed by the Spring Game at 1:30 p.m. on April 28. LSU will take Sunday off and the Tigers will return to the practice field on Monday.
