Football Season Begins With Spring Practice on the Ponderosa

BATON ROUGE –? LSU opened its spring practice on Monday with a two-hour session in shorts and helmets at the LSU practice fields.

The practice was the first of four for the Tigers this week as LSU will work again on Tuesday, followed by a session on Thursday and Saturday. LSU’s first scrimmage is set for Saturday, April 14.

Monday’s practice had the Tigers working on all phases on the game, with emphasis put on the special teams.

“It was fun to have practice today” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “We have a lot more players out there that know what’s going on (this year) and the retention of the older players is good. I think one of the most important things about spring practice is to see how many more guys we can elevate to get to understand enough about their position to be able to contribute in the fall.

“I was very pleased with the way the players came out today. We came out in good shape and we were able to get a lot done on the first day. We did a lot of teaching and the players really seemed to respond. I also thought that our new coaches did a nice job.”

Saban also praised the performance of junior Domanick Davis, who saw his first action with the defense. Davis, who was LSU’s second-leading rusher last season, practiced with the defensive backs on Monday.

“I was pleased with the way Domanick moved around on defense,” Saban said. “He picked up a lot of the things that were thrown at him.”

The Tigers will work again in shorts and helmets on Tuesday.

LSU will hold scrimmages on Saturday, April 14 and 21 with the Spring Game set for Saturday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m. This year’ LSU Spring Game will be televised on a tape-delay basis by College Sports-Southeast. Tickets for the Spring Game are currently on sale at the LSU Athletic Ticket Office with all proceeds going to benefit the new Academic Center for Athletes.
