BATON ROUGE — The University of Louisiana at Monroe captured its first regional victory with an 8-3 win over the University of New Orleans Friday night in the second game of the 2000 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
ULM (40-20) was powered by a complete game pitching performance by Kenny Holubec who broke the single season strikeout record (162) for the Indians previously set by Ben Sheets last season.? Holubec also brought his career strikeout total to 321 topping the ULM career mark of 319.
“I just came out there and the main thing was to give us a chance to win the game,” Holubec said. “I went out there and threw strikes and tried to be efficient with my pitches and get people out. Just doing what Smoke taught me to do for the four years I have been here.”
Offensively, the Indians managed 13 hits and saw five starters produce multiple hit games. ? ULM catcher Ted White finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, hit his ninth home run of the season, and hit his 24th double of the year which ties him for the ULM single season mark.? Junior Willie Core also provided two hits and three RBI for the Indians.? His two hits increased his season total to 83 and also broke the individual single season record.
UNO (37-24) drops into the loser’s bracket and will face Jackson St. at 11 a.m.? The winner will earn the right to play Saturday night at 7 p.m., and will face the loser of the 3 p.m. game between the University of Louisiana at Monroe and LSU.
