BATON ROUGE — The LSU National Championship baseball and women?s outdoor track and field team were greeted by an estimated 6,000 LSU fans for a two hour celebration at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Sunday afternoon.

President of the Louisiana System William Jenkins along with LSU Chancellor Mark Emmert began the celebration by honoring both teams.

LSU track and field head coach Pat Henry was introduced by Athletics Director Joe Dean. Henry along with his assistant coaches and women?s athletes won the 2000 NCAA Women?s Outdoor Track & Field Championship two weeks ago in Durham, N.C. It was the school?s 12th outdoor title in 14 years and the 20th national championship in Henry?s tenure at LSU.

The track and field team came from 46 points behind UCLA on the final day of competition to win the title when triple jumper Keisha Spencer won the triple jump in the final event.

The baseball team defeated Stanford, 6-5, to win the 2000 College World Series on Saturday afternoon in Omaha?s Rosenblatt Stadium. Team captain Blair Barbier presented the national championship trophy before the members of the team were announced.

Barbier and fellow senior Jeremy Witten hit a pair of bottom-of-the-eighth homers to bring LSU back from a 5-2 deficit before senior Brad Cresse drove in Ryan Theriot in the bottom of the ninth to give LSU a 6-5 win. Senior Trey Hodges, the CWS?s Most Outstanding Player, won two games in the series and earned a save.
