BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU men’s golf team proved it not only concentrates on the golf course, but in the classroom as well, landing three players on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
John Humphries led the way for the Tigers with a 3.3 grade-point average. He is currently undecided as to a major. Jeremy Wilkinson posted a 3.1 GPA in Finance, and Michael Vallillo was also singled out for his 3.0 GPA in General Studies.
“It doesn’t surprise me that these guys received this honor,” said head coach Greg Jones. “They are very responsible young men. Those guys take care of their business both on the course and off the course.”
“It’s great for them, and it’s great for the team. Taking care of business in the classroom allows you to focus that much better on the course.”
All three student-athletes played integral roles on Jones’ first team at LSU. Wilkinson posted the second best stroke average on the team at 73.3 and had the highest finish of any LSU golfer when he tied for second at the Alabama Spring Invitational.
Humphries will be the second most experienced player on next year’s squad, having competed in 10 tournaments in his redshirt freshman season, which ranked third on the team.
Vallillo competed in eight tournaments while finishing in a tie for ninth at the Bridges-All American earlier this spring.
To be eligible for Academic Honor Role, a player must have maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher for at least two semesters, be a sophomore or higher in terms of academic classification and have 24 semester hours toward a degree.
