KILLEN, Ala. — LSU shot nine strokes better than Saturday’s team total, carding a final round 2-under par 286 team total on the final day of the SEC men’s golf championships here at the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club.
That still wasn’t enough to hold onto fourth position, as South Carolina shot a tournament low 8-under 280 on the final day, bumping LSU into fifth spot overall.
Georgia (286-278-288–852, 10 under-par) overcame a furious rally by Auburn (290-283-281–854) to take home its third SEC Championship in the last three years by a two-stroke margin.
In the shootout for individual medalist honors, Auburn’s Roland Thatcher (71-69-68–208) overtook favorite Alex Rocha (70-68-73–211) of Mississippi State to take home the title with an 8-under par score. Rocha slipped into a three way tie for second, three strokes back at 5-under par 211.
LSU’s top finisher was Alan Morgan (77-71-71–219), who finished the tournament in 10th overall at 3-over. The finish marks Morgan’s fifth top-10 finish this year.
Also competing for the Tigers was Jeremy Wilkinson (76-76-69–221). Finishing at 5-over par for the tournament, Wilkinson found himself in a tie for the 14th overall position. Jason Humphries also turned in another good round on Sunday with a 1-over par 73, which put him at 6-over par for the tournament, tied for 19th position. John Humphries finished up the tournament at 7-over, one stroke behind older brother Jason, tied for the 24th spot overall. Craig Taylor also saw action for the Tigers this weekend, carding a 14-over par 230 for the weekend, tying him for 46th position.
“I’m very pleased with our finish today,” head coach Greg Jones said afterwards. “We played very well out there today, and had our best round of the tournament.”
