BATON ROUGE — The sixth-ranked LSU men’s tennis will host 33rd-ranked South Alabama on Saturday at 1 p.m. at “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
LSU (7-1) is coming off a 5-2 win on Wednesday over No. 16 Mississippi State in the Southeastern Conference opener for the Tigers.
“(South Alabama) is an SEC caliber team,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “They are very experienced and very well coached and we are expecting a very intense match.”
LSU is led into the match by seniors Tom Hand, ranked 21st nationally, and Michal Chmela, ranked 27th.
Along with the strong play in singles, LSU will attempt to extend its school-record streak of winning the doubles point. The point, which LSU has won in 20 consecutive matches, begins every match.
“South Alabama is a team that could compete in the top half of the SEC and will give us a good test. We will need to start the match with a great deal of intensity,” said Brown.
Coming into the match, LSU has a nine-match home winning streak. The team will also look to extend its overall winning streak to four.
The meeting between LSU and the South Alabama will only be the seventh all-time and the first since 1992. The Tigers have dominated the series winning each of the previous six meetings.
