Tigers Play Host To NCAA First Round Against Alcorn

BATON ROUGE — The 10th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships and take on Alcorn State in the first round at noon on Saturday, May 13. The other first-round match in Baton Rouge features Miami and Clemson at 3 p.m.

LSU (18-5, 8-3 SEC) has made back-to-back NCAA Men’s Tennis final four appearances in 1998 and 1999 after winning the SEC Championship in each.

“This is the second straight year we will play Alcorn in the first round so our players know what it will take to advance. They have a solid team and did a great job of winning their conference this season,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown.

The second round match up will take place on Sundcay, May 14 at 1 p.m. with the winner advancing to the round of 16 in Athens, Ga.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our team and for the great fans of LSU,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “We have a good regional with Clemson, Miami and Alcorn.

“(Clemson coach) Chuck Kriese and (Miami coach) Jay Burger are two of the best competitors in the game and have very talented teams that will provide some great tennis this weekend.”

This season, the Tigers have battled through a late-season injury to No. 2 singles player Tom Hand. Hand, who severely sprained his ankle on April 9, will return to action for regional play.

Without Hand, the Tigers lost two of four matches including a second-round 4-1 loss in the SEC Championships.
