Hand, Chmela Named First Team All-SEC

STARKVILLE, Miss. — LSU men’s tennis seniors Michal Chmela and Tom Hand were both named first-team all-SEC Wednesday night as the Tigers prepared for the SEC Tournament in Starkville, Miss.

It is the first time in school history that LSU has placed two members on the first-team all-SEC squad in tennis.

“Both Tom and Michal are a great example of what LSU tennis is all about,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “They work extremely hard all year long to reach this point and this is a nice honor for them to receive.”

For Chmela, this is the third consecutive time he has been named to the all-SEC first team, a first in school history. He was a second-team member his freshman season. He is only the fifth four-time all-SEC performer ever at LSU.

After earning a spot on the second team a year ago, Hand picks up the first team honor this year. Hand was also a second-team all-SEC doubles member his sophomore season with Chmela.

Chmela and Hand will lead LSU into action in the second round of this weekend’s SEC Tournament on Friday night at 8 p.m. The Tigers will face the winner of Thursday’s match between Georgia and Vanderbilt.
