BATON ROUGE – The ninth ranked LSU Tiger softball team will face the 16th ranked Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns on Wednesday in a double header at Tiger Park beginning at 5 p.m.
The games will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Network (107.3 FM) in Baton Rouge, and over the internet on www.LSUsports.net. The games will be televised by College Sports Southeast on tape-delay for later showing.
“The girls have been concentrating on the mental areas as well as the physical areas to prepare for this week’s games,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “There is a lot of excitement about this game between two rival state schools who are in the top 25. We are using this excitement to motivate the team to play at its
best for the home crowd.”
LSU and Louisiana-Lafayette have met six times with the Tigers winning five of the contests. In 1999, LSU swept a double header in Lafayette, 1-0 and 4-2.
Last years’ opening game went nine innings before LSU squeezed a run home in the top of the inning in a battle of pitchers Britni Sneed and Kim Dunlap, which could be recreated Wednesday night. Sneed is 12-5 in 2000, while Dunlap is 12-3.
In the second game last year, then junior Ashlee Ducote had three hits and drove in all of LSU’s four runs.
LSU is 31-7 overall and 9-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Louisiana-Lafayette is 27-9 overall going into a Tuesday night double header against Ole Miss.
The Tigers enter the game riding an 11-game winning streak after taking four games at Ole Miss over the weekend. Shaunte’ Fremin’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning helped LSU top the Rebels 5-3 in game one.
Pitcher Britni Sneed, who was named Co-Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, pitched her first college no-hitter in game two to shut Ole Miss out 3-0 with 12 strikeouts for the evening. In game three, the Tigers topped a school record by turning three double plays to defeat Ole Miss, 7-1. Trena Peel doubled to send Stacey Newton home in game four to complete the sweep with a 1-0 win for LSU.
The Tigers will return to the road this Friday and Saturday to for double headers at Mississippi State.
