BATON ROUGE — After an overnight rain delay, Britni Sneed and Ashley Lewis combined to throw a no hitter as No. 8 LSU defeated Auburn 9-1 in six innings on Sunday to finish the weekend 3-1.
“With the SEC getting stronger, anytime that you can take three of four from an SEC opponent has to be a good weekend,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “I am really pleased with the way the girls bounced back after a not-so-good outing on Friday and played well through the weather problems. They kept their intensity up and did what they had to do for the last two games. This give us some momentum going into the weekend with Florida. There is going to be a dog fight this year in the SEC. Every week we have to get better.”
LSU is now 22-7 and 3-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Friday night’s win against Auburn marked Moore’s 100th career win.
It was the bottom of the third when the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was delayed due to rain. LSU was ahead 4-0 with no outs and shortstop Tara Asbill on third. When the game was resumed on Sunday, Asbill scored on an error by catcher Michelle Martin to put LSU up 5-0.
LSU scored again in the fifth when second baseman Stephanie Hastings and Asbill singled and were hit home when third baseman Ashlee Ducote hit a two RBI single to center field. The score was now 7-0.
Auburn got their only run when left fielder Marcella Passarelli walked to get on base and scored when right fielder Sarah Orozco reached base a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on an error by second base.
The Tigers sealed the victory when right fielder Trena Peel got a bunt single and was hit in when first baseman Megann Steege launched a double to right center. Steege was then sent home on a single to right field by second baseman Auburne Ziober.
LSU pitchers Britni Sneed and Ashley Lewis combined for a no hitter. Sneed went two innings with one strikeout. Lewis improved her record to 8-2, pitching four innings with five strikeouts.
The Tiger hitters combined for 13 hits with Hastings and Asbill going perfect at the plate.
LSU will make-up the Wednesday rain out against Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
