BATON ROUGE — The No. 8 LSU Tiger softball team will play the first home double header Wednesday evening against Sam Houston State at 5 p.m. and Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. at Tiger Park.
“The girls are ready to play for the home crowd. We have traveled a lot recently and are excited to have the chance to entertain our fans,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “The tournaments we have participated in have given our team a chance to see tough competition prior to conference play and prepare us for the rest of the season.”
LSU is 19-6 after participating in five tournaments that allowed them to see some of the top teams in the nation. The Tiger team is responsible for No. 1 Washington’s only loss of the season.
The Tigers went 32 this past weekend at the OU/Worth Invitational in Norman, Okla. LSU defeated Wichita State 13-5 in five innings with Tigers Taryn Perry going 1-for-1 at the plate and Auburne Ziober going 2-for-2. Senior Tara Asbill hit her 19th career home run.
LSU then upset No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners 3-0 in the Tigers’ eighth shutout of the season. Tiger pitcher Ashley Lewis pitched five innings for the Tigers with only three hits and four strikeouts.
Against the No. 12 Southern Miss, senior Shaunte’ Fremin hit her first home run of the season to score the Tigers only run. However, USM pulled ahead of the Tigers with two solo home runs to win 2-1. Pitcher Britni Sneed only gave up two hits to Southern Miss.
On Sunday the Tigers beat Texas-San Antonio 3-2 in eleven innings. Lewis pitched seven innings only giving up one hit and striking out nine batters before she was relieved by Sneed who struck out eight batters in the next four innings. LSU then fell to Colorado State 4-2 to end the weekend.
The Southeastern Conference home opener will be this Friday at 5 and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. against Auburn.
