BATON ROUGE – The No. 7 LSU softball team shut down Kentucky in a doubleheader to extend its winning streak to 10 games.
The Tigers took game one 2-0 and game two 7-0. Their overall record is now 49-7 and 22-2 in the Southeastern Conference. LSU is 30-1 over its past 31 games.
“This is a good start for the weekend,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “Beating the Eastern division leader was a big step for us. We took two already this weekend, and Tennessee comes to town on Sunday.”
Game one remained scoreless through five and a half innings when the Tigers pulled ahead with two runs. Stephanie Hastings singled to start the inning, and Shaunte’ Fremin singled her home for the first run of the ball game. Ashley Lewis then singled to left field and sent home Ashlee Ducote for run number two.
Sophomore Britni Sneed pitched seven innings for the Tigers to set a new school record for most innings pitched in a season. Former pitcher Brandi Landry held the record of 181.1 which Sneed now surpasses with 187.1. She allowed only three hits and struck out six. Sneed also tied former Tiger Sarah KnifeChief for the school career record for most shutout in a career at 15.
The Tiger bats combined for six hits off Wildcat pitcher Keary Camunas. She struck out four Tiger batters.
In game two, LSU broke out with three run in the fourth. Hastings made it home on a sacrifice fly by Fremin. Tara Asbill scored next when Ducote stole second and second baseman Nikki Jones threw the ball into center field. Lewis singled in Ducote for the third run of the inning.
The Tigers pounded out six hits in the fifth that sent home four runs. Asbill singled in Stacey Newton. Fremin got her second RBI of the game to send home Hastings. Lewis picked up two RBI when Asbill and Ducote both made it home on her single.
LSU had 11 hits in game two with Hastings going 3-for -3 and Lewis going 2-for-3.
Lewis picked up her 19th win of the season. She only allowed four hits and struck out five. Senior Julie Stashko relieved her in the sixth inning. She did not give up a hit and struck out one.
The Tigers will play their last home double header on Sunday at noon against Arkansas. The 2000 LSU softball senior class will be recognized before game one.
