Softball Looks To Keep Rolling Against USC

BATON ROUGE — The seventh-ranked LSU softball team hopes it can continue its success in the league on the road as it travels to Columbia, S.C. Friday to take on the University of South Carolina in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. CST.

The doubleheader will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Network (107.3 FM in Baton Rouge).

LSU made it a school record 19 consecutive wins on Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep over Louisiana Tech, winning 6-0 and 8-1, with Britni Sneed throwing her second no-hitter of the season in the opener against the Techsters.

LSU has played its last eight SEC games on the road, winning four at Ole Miss and Mississippi State. LSU concludes the road trip following the South Carolina twinbill by going to Athens, Ga., for a Saturday doubleheader with the Georgia Lady Bulldogs which begins at Noon.

LSU enters the contest with a 39-7 record, 13-1 in the SEC West and the best overall record in the league. This is the same record LSU had in the league at the same point a year ago when LSU finished 27-3 and finished as league champion. South Carolina enters the doubleheader with a 29-17 mark and a 10-9 slate in the SEC East. The Lady Gamecocks are in second place behind East leading Kentucky (7-5).

LSU is trying to stay ahead of Alabama in the chase for the overall crown, with the Tide having played four more games in the league with a record of 16-2.

“With the way Alabama is playing in the league, this is a very important weekend for us to take care of our own business and focus on continuing to play good solid softball,” said LSU Coach Glenn Moore. “The girls have concentrated well the last few weeks in tough situations and that has continued to pay off for us.”

The Tigers are expected to go with their normal starters for SEC play, Sneed and Ashley Lewis. Sneed is 16-5 on the season, while Lewis is 15-2. The Tigers lead the SEC with a 1.38 ERA.
